My Journey at Community Works

“I was deeply impressed by the services offered at Community Works.”

Naz, Senior Project Worker

From Nursery Parent to Senior Project Worker

I first became involved with Community Works in 2016 as a nursery parent. I was delighted when the CEO approached me and invited me to join the board as a parent governor. This role was inspiring and gave me valuable insight into strategic thinking, accountability, and decision making. I was deeply impressed by the services offered at Community Works, and in 2018 I decided to begin volunteering.

During my voluntary work, I supported project workers across ESOL, job club, and IT sessions. I thoroughly enjoyed making a direct difference in people’s lives — helping service users build confidence, forge meaningful connections, and improve their wellbeing. In 2021, I was offered a role as a project worker, and after successfully completing my six-month probation, I was promoted to senior project worker.

Five years later, I am still here, taking great pride in my work and the community I serve. My role involves managing and delivering a range of community projects:

  • ESOL Classes: I teach general conversational ESOL and cover reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. These sessions are delivered both face-to-face and online via Zoom, ensuring accessibility for all learners.
  • Job Club: I create a friendly, supportive environment where service users can develop their employability skills. I help them identify strengths and career goals, support them with CV writing and job applications, and practice interview techniques.
  • Food Pantry: I assist in providing access to food for local families and individuals, offering a welcoming and respectful environment for everyone who visits.
  • Theory Classes: I teach foundational theory sessions that empower learners to think independently, build confidence, and develop skills that support them throughout their lives.

I find my work incredibly rewarding. I am constantly learning on the job, gaining new skills, and growing both personally and professionally. Most importantly, I feel deep satisfaction knowing that I am supporting others, building meaningful connections, and making a positive difference every day.

Through all these roles, I help service users build confidence, develop practical skills, and create opportunities for a better future. My work allows me to support people facing different challenges and contribute to improving their lives in meaningful ways.
